Abstract:
Peppermint | menthol | pine, fur, & spruce | relaxing & cooling
Hypothesis:
After the success of our Washy-Garami Natural Bar Soap with our jiu jitsu friends, I decided that we needed another bar to compliment it. Niaouli oil was my first thought, as it had been suggested with the initial design of Washy-Garami, but didn't make it in the final scent blend. I also knew I wanted something intensely refreshing and cooling, so peppermint oil and complimenting scents were going to be my friend.
Originally called Recovery (that's what I wanted it to be for, relaxing sore muscles, like an express Epsom salt bath), we changed the name to Chilly Willy, because that was what we were calling it behind the scenes and it was way funnier and cooler.
Experimental Design:
This was my first time putting menthol in soap, but I figured it would have effects on how fast the soap turned into soap, specifically by accelerating it. I wanted to add enough to make the soap cooling, but also give me enough time to pour and come back to add the blue mica to make a really cool swirl pattern without it getting too stiff.
A little more about niaouli oil I mentioned earlier: niaouli is part of the tea tree family, which is known for its anti-septic properties. I chose niaouli over tea tree, because it is much milder in scent and more suitable for sensitive skin. It also better complimented the peppermint, conifers, and eucalyptus in this blend with its more medicinal, lemony scent.
Data & Conclusion:
This bar is the perfect for after the gym, a hot day outside, or when you need to relieve a little bit of achiness. Some of our friends with eczema have also mentioned it helps them not want to scratch as much! The scent is incredibly uplifting and invigorating; and, it makes your skin feel like you got out of the pool on a nice day with a slight breeze. Not overly cooling, however, when left on the skin for a longer period of time, the cooling effects increase.
